Top 3 Maintenance Tips for Swimming Pool Owners

How to Keep Your Pool Sparkling

If a swimming pool is on your must-have list, here are the three most important must-dos in maintenance:

1) A balanced pool is the most important factor in swimming pool maintenance.  You may be surprised to find out a “balanced” pool has nothing to do with the chlorine level.  Regularly check and keep the pH, total alkalinity, and calcium hardness in balance.  Your pool will be safer.

2) Check the chlorine levels every day.  Sunshine actually causes chlorine to dissipate and since it is a disinfecting agent, it is necessary to monitor the levels closely.  It is also important to keep the water (and the chemicals) circulating.  So, turning the pool pump on and off, thinking you are going to save money, means the water isn’t circulating.  This is where the problems start.  Plus…turning the pump on and off wears it out faster.  You will be replacing the pump more often.

3) The third tip is about pool heaters.  Not every pool has one but if yours does then find your ideal temperature and maintain it.  A pool heater will add approximately $300/season to your electric bill (depending on how warm you want the pool water to be).  And don’t turn off the pool heater once you find your temperature.  It takes more energy to heat a “cooled-off” pool than it does to maintain a specific temperature.
