Swimming Pool FAQs

Should I get a Swimming Pool?

I recently sat down with Scott London from Sundays Off Pools in Minneapolis to talk about what homeowners should think about before buying a pool.  He shared the top 3 most frequently-asked homeowner/client questions:

1)      Can I get a pool to sit by?

It’s not always about swimming.  Homeowners asking this question are looking at the social aspect of having a pool. True, a backyard swimming pool isn’t for everyone but those who have one know it’s all about quality of life.  They want to just sit at the edge of the pool, dangle their feet in the water, and have a nice, relaxing conversation at the end of the day.  To fulfill that dream, newer pools have a bigger step area, more like a landing, so wading is an option.

2)      Should I get a diving board?

Well, the answer to that is “How are you going to use your pool?”  Sorry to answer a question with a question but this is key to figuring out what amenities, if any, should be added to the cost of the pool.  How often will the diving board be used?  Seriously, even the kids with boundless energy will lose interest once the newness wears off.  And people are generally only in the deep end about 15% of the time they are in the pool. Diving pools must be at least 8’ deep.  The same logic applies when considering a slide.  Also keep in mind, slides and diving boards will take up some real estate on the pool deck.

3) Should I have underwater lights?

Your pool has two personalities…one in the day, one at night.  During the day, a pool sparkles and looks inviting, particularly on a hot day but, at night, the mood changes.  Underwater lighting will add ambiance and color to your back yard. Fortunately, underwater lights have evolved beyond the bright white light at one end of the pool. People want style and lighting gives a pool style.  The glow of underwater lighting simply puts the finishing touch on the beauty of your pool.
