2013 Outdoor Living Trends

What Does Your Dream Back Yard Look Like?

Outdoor living spaces have moved beyond the simple patio or deck with way too much furniture in a too-small-space.  Each designed space is unique and reflects the homeowner’s needs and wants.  However, the list of must-haves has changed a bit over the last few years.  Outdoor kitchens were all the rage just a few years ago and are still very popular but other landscape elements now take the top spots.

According to the 2013 Residential Landscape Architecture Trends survey conducted by the American Society of Landscape Architects, the results are showing homeowners would like the indoor spaces to extend outside and they are “adding outdoor rooms for entertaining and recreation”.

Here are the latest trends and how they ranked according to those surveyed as “somewhat or very in-demand”:

  • Fire pits and Fireplaces                  97%
  • Grills                                                      96%
  • Seating and Dining Areas              96.3%
  • Night lighting                                     95.1%

In the somewhat or very popular category:

  • Outdoor Kitchens                             94.5%
  • Gardens/Landscaped Spaces      94.4%
  • Ponds, Waterfalls                            90.9%
  • Spas                                                       81.5%
  • Pools                                                     75.3%

One trend that is good to see…the demand for low-maintenance landscapes has increased to 93.9% with native plants/organic gardening increasing about 4% to 65.3%. Sustainable landscape elements, such as permeable pavers, are also gaining favor with homeowners.

Are any of these landscape elements on your wish list?  If so, give us a call.  Southview Design can help you realize that dream.
