Front Porches Are Back….and Gaining in Popularity

The front porch. A porch swing. Two rockers. Flowers. A game of chess.

Did you grow up in a home with a front porch?  I have always loved the front porch swing myself. Life on the front porch – it has always been a place to enjoy the lazy, hazy summer afternoons and evenings, a place to connect with your neighbors and the community.  In the last few decades, the garage dominated the front of the home.  But the latest figures from the U.S. Census Bureau (who knew they kept track of this?!) show 63% of the houses built in the Midwest last year had porches, up a whopping 50% since 1992.  On the other hand, the share of homes with decks has fallen from 41% to 32%.  Below are just a few of the front porches we have had the pleasure of enhancing with landscaping.
