Big Easy in Highland Park

Or How to Fit New Orleans in Your Back Yard

Landscape designer Matt Burton packed a lot of landscaping in a very small urban St. Paul back yard.  In just 800 square feet, he created  outdoor spaces for a gas-burning fireplace, a water feature, and a private patio/seating area…all surrounded by a cedar privacy fence and done with a New Orleans flair.

The ‘before’ pictures are enough to make you cringe.  No entertaining space.  No reason to be in the yard. The garden bench was not a destination point.  It was merely an accessory making an attempt to make the back yard less boring.

The homeowners so love the New Orleans-style in outdoor rooms, they went to the Big Easy to order custom-made gas light fixtures. One of those fixtures is on the front face of the fireplace.  Note the fleur-de-lis wrought iron atop the side gate.  The water feature sits up against the fence; right next to the tucked-away seating area so the homeowners have the sound of water close by.

Where the garden bench was sitting, there is now a gorgeous clay brick, gas-burning fireplace.

That’s the water feature down at the end….and the seating ‘nook’ is to the right.
