Garden Whimsy – Fun for All Ages

Fairies, and Gnomes, and Elves - Oh My!

There is something enchanting about the miniature-sized fairy gardens. Haven’t seen one? Look closely in your neighbor’s garden. Mystical, magical, and unexpected, these tiny gardens stir up our imaginations. Don’t believe in fairies? Tinkerbelle would be disappointed. But these gardens can also harbor elves, gnomes, and leprechauns. The idea of a fairy garden goes back to Celtic beliefs. More popular in recent years, retail stores and the internet abound with kits, furniture, landscaping, stones, garden art, and more.

The gardens can be in a container, under a shrub, at the base of a tree; in a rose garden…the possibilities are endless. They can be large or small. You decide. And, I have heard, you may need more than one garden in your yard for the fairies to visit. Otherwise, they may get bored and leave your yard…never to return.

Garden kits and fairy garden materials can be found on Amazon, Ebay, at your big-box home improvement stores, local gardens centers/nurseries (such as Tonkadale Greenhouse in Minnetonka, Pahl’s Market in Apple Valley and others). For a little inspiration, check out Fairy Gardens on Pinterest:

For information on how to put a fairy garden together, Karen Noltee of the Rochester (MN) Garden and Flower Club put some notes together that might be helpful at Also included in her notes are plant lists and other resource websites to give you some “how-to” help. Basically, you will need the following:

  • Container(s)
  • Quality Potting Soil
  • Accessories
  • Plants
  • Mulch

You can tell yourself you are creating these little gardens for your kids or grandkids but, deep down, you know you love them too. It’s great family fun for all ages!
