Colleen’s Favorite Plants

Or...What Designers Have in Their Yards

Garden magazines frequently have a weekly or monthly feature called “My Favorite Plant” – usually a favorite of one of the magazine staff or a reader.

Our designers spend time making sure they know their client’s favorite colors and which plants they like or don’t like…which is fair because it is the client’s yard and design. But it occurred to me no one has ever asked the designers about their favorite plants. I decided to change that.  I caught award-winning designer, Colleen Moran, in a quiet moment (unusual for this time of year) and asked her for her favorite perennial, shrub, and tree. Here is what she said:

Perennial:  ‘Zagreb’ Coreopsis

Zagreb Coreopsis - such a sweetheart of a perennial!

This is a mounded plant with thread-like leaves and daisy-like flowers.  It fits well in small spaces (15” ht x 18” width) and will bloom from June to September with regular deadheading.

Shrub:  ‘Wine & Roses’ Weigela

Stunning pink flowers against a background of dark burgundy/purple leaves (4’ x 4’).  Will stand out in the landscape.

Tree:  ‘Silver Whispers’ – Swiss Stone Pine

Perfect Fit for Small Spaces – Silver Whispers Pine

What a great little evergreen for small spaces.  Average mature size is ~10-12’ ht x 5-6’ width.  Fine-textured needles and upright, it is a slow-grower.  It has been known to live for 60 years with the right conditions.  Although ‘Silver Whispers’ is deer-resistant, I have seen deer damage here in Minnesota – most likely because it was the only food readily available in deep, spring snow pack.  I would keep an eye on it.

Colleen said this is her favorite combination of texture and color.  Does she have this combo in her own yard?  You bet!  If you would like Colleen’s help in creating a colorful, pleasing space in your yard, give us a call.
