Bob’s Plant Favorites

Color, Color, and more Color!

Ask a designer, “What’s your favorite plant?” and you will get a deer-in-headlights look as he or she ponders the question.  We find that clients will often know which trees, shrubs, or perennials they don’t like before coming up with something they do.  Sometimes it’s just a process of elimination.  Some clients want all evergreens, some won’t stand for anything with yellow flowers, and others hate hostas.  Each client is different….and so is each designer.

When I asked designer Bob Renaud, “What would you put in your yard?”…his response was, “That’s a tough question.”  Taking a few minutes to think about it, here is what he came up with:

Tree:  Sugar Maple

This tree will eventually be 50-75’ tall by 50’ wide.  It’s upright and rounded with glossy green leaves in summer and stunning shades of yellow, orange and red in the fall.

Shrub: PeeGee Hydrangea

This shrub is a prolific bloomer in August and September and as a shrub can get to 12’ high by 10-15’ wide.  This is one of the best varieties of hydrangea for cutting and drying flowers.

Perennial:  ‘Pow Wow Wildberry’ Echinacea

This is a new Echinacea with more flowers.  Wild Berry is a 2010 All-American selection winner. It will grow to 20-24” tall and 24” wide.  Wouldn’t these be beautiful in a mass planting?
